Mechanical Engineer_Rotating Equipment Job Description

EPC Engineering 팀에 속하는 팀은 크게 Process, Mechanical, Piping, I&E 이다.

상위개념인 Plant engineering으로 올라가면 더 많은 조직이 존재하지만 이건 너무 넓어지니가 좀 좁혀서보자.

내가 속한 Mechanical team에서는 Equipment를 다룬다 (조직상으로는 Piping 과 함께 묶여서 Mechanical / Piping 팀이다).

이 기기들은 크게는 두가지 Rotating 과 Static (Fixed)으로 구분한다.

하지만 좀 더 세부적으로 나눠보자면

• Rotating: Compressor, Pump, Turbines, Blower, etc.
• Static (Fixed): Distillation tower, Separator, Storage tank, etc.
• Heat transfer (Fixed): Heat exchanger, Condenser, etc.
• Reactor (Fixed): Reactors

 

학위과정에서의 연구와 OEM에서 일을 했던 경험으로 Rotating과 Static (그중에서 Heat exchanger)는 같이 업무를 할 수 있지만 지금 내 포지션은 Rotating equipment가 메인이니 EPC에서 Mechanical engineer (Rotating equipment)는 어떤 일을 요구하는지를 정리해본다.

 

미국에서 구직을 할 때 기본적으로 볼 수 있는게 바로 Job description이라는 것이다.

여기에는 회사에서 오픈한 포지션과 요구하는 업무 내용이 기입된다.

 

내 포지션에서 오픈되었던 걸 보면

• Job level: Senior level

• Position overview: We are an innovative team of engineers and designers that supports projects throughout the company. Our staff leads and collaborates with Kiewit’s module fabrication and construction teams to approach construction-driven engineering with a focus on safe, cost effective, and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit’s legacy of excellence. This position focuses on the application and specification of rotating equipment including centrifugal and axial compressors, positive displacement compressors, blowers, turbo-expanders, gas turbines, steam turbines, pumps, and other similar equipment.

 

이게 기본적인 정보이다.

포지션 레벨, 회사명 또는 sub-division 이름, 업무 영역 등인데 Rotating equipment로 올라왔던 공고 (내가 지원하고 오퍼를 받고 일하고 있는 포지션)이다.

보면 각종 compressor, turbine, pump 등 Rotating equipment를 위한 포지션임을 명시한다.

또 EPC에서 확장한 EPFC, Fabrication이 추가된 를 위해서 우리 회사는 modularization 을 하기에 필요따라 이 업무 지원을 하는 것도 포함된다.

 

해야할 일인 Responsibility는,

• Perform rotating equipment technology selection 
• Evaluate equipment sizing, design, and performance to meet process duty requirements.
• Prepare specifications with sufficient detail to define the equipment scope and technical requirements, including auxiliary systems, for inquiry and order of equipment on projects.
• Perform technical bid evaluations.
• Review vendor documents submitted for review or approval. Act as the communication focal point for appropriate information/data between the vendor, client, and other disciplines.
• Support installation, commissioning, and startup of rotating equipment.
• Develop criteria, guidelines, and best practices for the equipment to provide for a safe, efficient, cost-effective, and reliable end product.
• Mentor less experienced engineers.

 

Senior 레벨을 원했기 때문에 추가되는 일들이 Spec, Guideline, Criteria, Practice 개발, Mentor 같은 것이다.

OEM과의 차이가 여기서 보이는데 OEM에서의 포지션은 다양하다.

I&E를 제외하고 기기만 놓고 보면 ero, Mechanical, Aux. system 등 구분되어 채용하는데 EPC에서는 Mechcanical 하나이다.

 

이 포지션에 지원하기 위한 기본 요구 조건인 Qualification은,

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a four-year college or university.
• At least 7+ years of experience in rotating equipment application specifically in the LNG, midstream, refining, and/or petrochemical industries.
• Thorough (recognized authority) knowledge and application of: API standards for rotating equipment and their auxiliary systems; Best practices associated with rotating equipment and their auxiliary systems; Quality assurance methods and practices for manufacture of the equipment.
• Strong understanding of underlying engineering principles of best practices.
• Strong critical thinking skills.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to safety, ethics, and integrity.

 

다른 회사들의 같은 직군을 들여다봐도 표현의 차이가 있을 뿐 거의 비슷하다.

EPC 엔지니어들은 거의 EPC 안에서 이직을 하거나 상위 업체로 가는 경우가 많은 반면 OEM에 있다 EPC로 진입하는 경우는 사실 흔하지는 않은 듯하다.
